About "Into the Under"
“We talk so much of light, please
let me speak on behalf
of the good dark. Let us
talk more of how dark
the beginning of a day is.”
--Maggie Smith
The ancient Sumerian goddess Inanna bent her body down. Cheek to the cold earth, ear to the ground. She listened and yearned for the deep of the great below. What comes when we long for the dark? What comes from letting go the demands of daylight and performance in the world? What comes from welcoming the necessary winter of things? What do we make room for when we allow a necessary death?
Inspired by imagery from the myth of Inanna, using mushrooms to represent the great process of breaking down death and transforming what remains into new life, and crow guardians, the intermediaries between the spirit world and ours, Into the Under aims to celebrate the “good dark.”
Quiet the din of the outer world of light and dive into the internal world. Withdraw from the nibbling, biting, concerns of others and the demands of the day. Internal dives are necessary to recall the deeper honor of life. What emanates from this dark womb of existence? What is essential? What is true? Take a long cool drink from the well within.
